Alhamdulillaah, this Deen has been made complete in every part of it. Allaah subhaanahu wa
ta'ala says in the Qur'aan: "This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islām as your religion." [Al-Maa'idah: 3]
Every nation has its own celebrations and so do Muslims. Allaah, subhaanahu wa Ta'ala, stated in the Qur'aan: "And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies.." [Al-Hajj: 34] And from the ahadeeth:
Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, once saw the Ansaar celebrating a certain day. He inquired about that and was informed: This is one of two days that we used to celebrate
in Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islaamic ignorance) and we continue to do so. He replied:
Nay! Allaah has substituted for you two better days: the day of al-Fitr and the day of al-Adhhaa. [Authentic; narrated by Ahmad, an-Nasaaee, and others]
We have also been warned about imitating the Kuffaar. The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, has said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Narrated by Abu
Dawood, 3512; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani] Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, rahimahullaah, said: This at the very least indicates that it is haraam to imitate them,
although the apparent meaning is that the one who imitates them is a kaafir. Iqtida' al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem, 1/237. Ibn Taymiyah, rahimahullaah, has also said: "Imitating
them in outward matters leads to imitating them in attitude and actions, hence we are forbidden to imitate the kuffaar, the Persians and the Bedouin, and both men and women are forbidden to imitate the opposite sex, as it says
in the marfoo' hadeeth: 'Whoever imitates a people is one of them.'" [Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 22/54.] Even congatulating them on their days of celebration is not allowed. Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy on him, said in Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah:
"Congratulating the kuffaar on the rituals that belong only to them is haraam by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying 'A happy festival to you' or 'May
you enjoy your festival,' and so on. If the one who says this has been saved from kufr, it is still forbidden. It is like congratulating someone for prostrating to the cross, or even worse than
that. It is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on. Many of those who have no respect for their religion
fall into this error; they do not realize the offensiveness of their actions. Whoever congratulates a person for his disobedience or bid'ah or kufr exposes himself to the wrath and anger of
Allaah."
There are also innovated celebrations among Muslims eventhough Allaah's Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, has clearly stated that we have onlu two 'eids and that "Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator then upon him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of mankind." [Bukhaaree (12/41) and Muslim (9/140)]
We need to be aware of the innovated celebrations as well as the celebrations of the disbelievers so that we can avoid taking part in them, inshaAllaah. Please refer to the articles below
for a more detailed description of the celebrations.
